Foot-Loom Weaving in Central Mexico

Foot-loom weaving is dying out in Central Mexico because most people are not willing to pay for hand-woven cloth when inexpensive industrially-woven cloth is available. Although a few artisans continue to weave serapes, blankets, bedspreads and towels, it is only a matter of time before they, too, will be forced to stop production. The quality of their work is excellent, but the market is too small to support many of them. Although some weavers are using synthetic threads, others weave with cotton and wool, even though natural materials require more work to process and dye...

Ikat Shawls of Uriangato and Moroleon, Mexico

Only a few small establishments still produce ikat - dyed, foot-loom woven shawls in Moroleon and Uriangato, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Ikat is a dying technique that allows the warp to be selectively colored before it is woven. A shrinking market and competition with industrially woven cloth has forced many weavers to stop their production. The shawls pictured below are 100% cotton...

Gobelin Tapestry Weaving in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico

Professor Francisco Javier Cuamatzi began the gobelin tapestry weaving program at the Technical Secondary School in Dolores Hidalgo in 1961. He commissioned 20 looms and established the curriculum for two classes; beginning and advanced. Since his retirement, his son, Adán Flores Cololetzi, has continued the program. Over 250 students, ages ten through twelve, learn to design and weave each year. Three small tapestries are warped onto each loom. The warp is cotton and the weft is acrylic. Students work in teams of six; each weaving a portion of a shared tapestry during class.

Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet is similar to regular crochet, except that two or more yarns are worked at the same time to create a colorful fabric. Actually, one or more yarns are carried while another yarn is crocheted. The finished pieces look woven instead of crocheted.  I discovered tapestry crochet in 1976 when I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala. Mayan men tapestry crochet beautiful traditional shoulder bags with cotton thread or wool yarn. In other parts of the world tapestry crochet is used to make yarmulkes and hats...
